Janet was born the last of nine children in Gary, Indiana to parents Joseph and Katherine Jackson. Joseph worked hard labor as a crane operator in Gary's steel mills. Before Janet was born, Joe had his own music career forming the R&B band, the Falcons. They never got as far as the biggest nightclub in Gary. Joseph was also a tough disciplinarian whose teachings and lessons he instilled on his children would later be questioned by those who have written books about him since.
While Joe was stern and gregarious, mother Katherine seemed angelic. For a time before Janet was born, Katherine also held down a job working as a store clerk for Sears. She quit the job as soon as she became a devout Jehovah's Witness in 1965. She was considered the one who "kept the glue within the family" during the earlier years.
By the time she was a toddler, Janet's older brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael had already begun to perform onstage at nightclubs and theaters as the Jackson 5. In March 1969, the group signed to Motown Records, and by the end of the year, the group recorded their first of their four consecutive number-one singles, "I Want You Back". By the time the J5 had achieved success, the entire family moved out of Gary to Southern California, eventually settling in a gated mansion they named Hayvenhurst in 1971. Janet was five years old by this point.
Janet first tried out her showbiz talents at the age of 5 in Las Vegas opening up for her brothers. By age 7, Janet was singing and dancing on TV specials with her brothers. But it was her acting in various sitcoms (Good Times (1977-79), Diff'rent Strokes (1981-82), and Fame) that first found her some success. Janet was actually hand-picked by TV mogul Norman Lear to appear in Good Times.
At age 16, Janet was coerced into the music industry by her father and signed to A&M Records. Her first LP, Janet Jackson, showed little success. Janet had a little success with the single "Young Love" and "Come Give Your Love To Me." The same lack of interest was shown with her second LP, Dream Street . Janet's first move to veer away from family wishes came with her short-lived marriage to James DeBarge of DeBarge at age 18. Janet's marriage was annulled and her career needed revamping. Powerhouse producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were brought in to work with Janet, and through their efforts to bring out the real Janet, she was able to proclaim her talents.
Janet's jump to superstar status began with Control. The LP was produced by powerhouses Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and spawned 6 Top 10 hits as well as many memorable videos ("What Have You Done For Me Lately," "Nasty," "When I Think Of You," "Control," "Let's Wait Awhile," and "The Pleasure Principle"). Control was described as a young woman's declaration of freedom from parental guidance and exploration of a new world and maturity. The first single, "What Have You Done For Me Lately?" showed video audiences that Janet could dance and gave radio a new budding diva of strength and certainty.
Janet's first tour became the most succesfull debut tour ever!
Then, Janet released Rhythm Nation 1814 which added to her Top 10 streak with 6 more #1 hits, including "Miss You Much," "Black Cat," "Escapade," "Come Back To Me," "Rhythm Nation," and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," and a total of 8 Top 10 hits from a single LP ("Alright" and "State Of The World"). The LP focused on humanity and inspiration, and Janet's views on the world. In March 1991, Janet signed a $32 million record deal with Virgin Records.
In May 1993, Janet released her album "Janet." which contained the #1 hits "If," "Because Of Love," "Any Time, Any Place," and "Again" as well as her biggest charting single, "That's The Way Love Goes" which topped charts for 8 weeks. Other hits included "You Want This" and "Throb." The LP was Janet's exploration of sensuality and self-identity. janet. touches all aspects of music including pop, rock, jazz, rap, hip-hop, and even opera, and includes guests such as opera great, Kathleen Battle on "This Time" and Chuck D of Public Enemy.
In July of the same year, Janet returned to her acting with a starring role with 2Pac in John Singleton's Poetic Justice. The song "Again" was used for the movie and was later nominated for an Academy Award.
Janet released a greatest hits package, Design Of A Decade 1986-96, which gave Janet her 13th #1 hit, "Runaway", in October 1995. A couple of months later, Janet signed her famous record $70-million, five-album deal with Virgin Records.
Janet's next album released, The Velvet Rope, had Janet exploring her own childhood issues and adult pressures. She stated: "It was really hard for me to make this album. A lot of the songs were really difficult, not so much to write, but to sing, because it hits so close to home." On "Free Xone," Janet confronts the issue of homophobia: "I'm just tired of it. I have friends who are having a difficult time coming out. They're playing different characters with different people and not being themselves." Janet's first official single release from her latest album The Velvet Rope had its profits donated to charity. "Together Again" is Janet's anthem for people suffering with AIDS, as well as for their families and friends. The song is one of the most popular tracks from her new album and also allows Janet to release a danceable track. Janet has stated: " I believe we have other lives. I don't believe in the finality of death. I wanted to write about friends who have died of AIDS, but without being mournful or sad. I wanted to celebrate their spirit. I'm pleased that 'Together Again' is just that -- a celebration, a confirmation that the energy of love will never die." The recipient of the donated profits will be AmFAR: the American Foundation for AIDS Research.
Some of the advertising for Janet's world tour caused some controversy for its revealing presentation of Jackson. The advertising for Janet's The Velvet Rope Tour has been called too racy and was altered for some newspaper advertising and removed from billboard in England after several car accidents were blamed on drivers that were distracted by the billboard.
In 2000, Janet's longtime boyfriend Rene Elizondo filed for divorce from a 9 year secret marriage with Janet. During this time, Janet got a role in her second movie "The Nutty professor II: the Klumps". In 2001, Janet launched her album "All for you". "All For You" made history on radio when it was added to every radio station that reports to Radio & Records! A worldtour was planned and underway, but in October 2001
Janet cancelled her European concert tour due to concerns related to terrorist attacks in the U.S.: "My European fans are among the most loyal and I was very excited to share this show with them. I have agonized over this decision. Like most people, the events of Sept. 11 have troubled me enormously and I remain concerned about the foreseeable future. If anything happened to anyone on this tour, I could never forgive myself."
Right before the launch of her latest album "Damita Jo" (March 2004), Janet performed at the Superbowl Halftime show. Near the end of the performance, Janet helped out Justin Timberlake on "Rock Your Body" - at the end of the song, Timberlake reached over to tear off a portion of Janet's costume, resulting in Janet flashing a breast to over 90 million viewers on live TV. Controversy over the move soon erupted with the NFL and CBS being outraged at MTV (who produced the segment) and the performers. The question was - was it intentional or a mistake. Janet released a statement the following day: "The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my halftime show performance was made after final rehearsals. MTV was completely unaware of it. It was not my intention that it go as far as it did. I apologize to anyone offended including the audience, MTV, CBS, and the NFL." Timberlake had also previously stated the incident was a costume malfunction.
In September of 2004 we saw Janet starring in an episode of the popular tv series "Will & Grace". Right now, Janet is happy with her boyfriend Jermaine Dupri and at this moment, we are all awaiting Janets new album which will be released early next year.
