:: Biography ÓíÑå ÐÇÊíå :
Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone, born on August 16, 1958, in Detroit, Michigan, USA.
Madonna comes from a family of 8 children; 4 brothers and 3 younger sisters. She attended various catholic schools.
Madonna lost her mother to breast cancer at the age of six. This would continue to haunt her even to this day. In 1976, the family moved to Rochester, Michigan, where Madonna graduated from Rochester Adams High School. Madonna grew up in a musical family, where everyone was expected to learn a musical instrument. But Madonna was only interested in dancing, and eventually went to dancing school.
In 1978, Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone, made her move to New York. She got a job in Dunkin' Donuts, as well as doing modeling jobs. It was here that she met Dan Gilroy, whom she began to work with on writing songs. She learned to play the drums and guitar.
In 1979, Madonna went to France to work with disco singer Patrick Hernandez. Six months later, she became homesick and restless, and returned to New York and Dan Gilroy. They formed the Breakfast Club band, and performed in local clubs. She soon met up with an old friend from Detroit, Steve Bray. Together they formed the band, Emmy. As the band broke up a short time later, Bray and Madonna stayed together and created dance tracks. In order to survive, Madonna agreed to pose nude for a photographer. These pictures would later surface, as her career began to rise. Madonna and Bray landed a recording contract with Sire Records, with the help of Mark Kamins. With Kamin's help, she recorded her first song “Everybody”, which became a club hit in 1982.
In 1983, her first album, “Madonna” was produced and released by Reggie Lucas. It was “Holiday”, written and produced by Jellybean Benitez, that moved her into the top 20 of the pop charts (reaching #16). It wasn't until the video “Borderline” in 1984 that the masses put a face behind the music.
The same year, Madonna landed her first big movie role in “Desperately Seeking Susan". The movie was premiered in 1985, shortly after Madonna’s second album “Like a Virgin” was released in November, 1984.
The album sold 11 million copies worldwide and pushed her to star status. She hired Freddy DeMann as her manager. The MTV Awards wedding dress performance of Like A Virgin would be one of her greatest memorable performances. One that people will always remember her for, and one that changed the music industry.
“Material Girl” followed, with a different look (as it was a tribute to Marilyn Monroe's "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend" from Monroe's classic film "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"). She went on her first tour, “Virgin Tour”, which was only in the United States (38 shows in 28 cities).
By the end of her Live Aid performance, the release of her third album “True Blue”, the “Who’s that Girl” tour, and her marriage to Sean Penn, Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone had become an international super star. Her meteoric rise was evident by the many Madonna wannabees, who were young girls that dressed like Madonna and adopted her self-conscious attitude. Even back then, Madonna stirred up controversies, and the debate among adults rose: is Madonna a proper role model for young girls?
True Blue was released in 1986, and the “Who’s That Girl” World Tour was in 1987. The album and tour brought out a total new look for Madonna, as she lost the plastic bracelets, bleached hair, and made a huge turn towards the Italian or Latin look. The album had a number of hits, Papa Don’t Preach, Open Your Heart, and La Isla Bonita. Her movie with her husband, Sean Penn, “Shanghai Surprise”, was a flop at the box-office, as well as for Madonna. At the end of 1987, she released her first compilation of her dance hits, “You Can Dance”.
Following her divorce from Sean Penn in 1989, her next album “Like A Prayer” was released in March 1989. Once again, a new Madonna surfaced. She was strong, with an attitude, very sexual and somewhat hard. Controversy ensued with the release of the video of “Like A Prayer”, as it stirred up wrath with it's love story of a black Jesus and Madonna. It also showed Madonna dancing half naked in church, with burning crosses in the background. The commotion the video caused, made Pepsi nervous about the Madonna commercial, which was tied to the song, and they pulled the commercial after one showing. Madonna made 5 million from the commercial anyway.
“Express Yourself” video followed, and her choreography that included crotch grabbing, caused more controversy. Her sexual revolution was in full force. “Cherish” and “Oh Father” was also released from the Like A Prayer album to great success.
Soon rumors, which would turn out to be true, had Madonna having an affair with Warren Beatty during the filming of the Dick Tracey movie, in which she starred next to him.
The movie was successful, as the song "Sooner or Later" won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Madonna gave a masterful performance, as she sang the song live at the awards telecast.
The “I’m Breathless” album produced Madonna’s greatest hit, “Vogue”.
In April 1990, Madonna began her third tour, “Blond Ambition”. The tour, which many called her best, was a song and dance spectacular, provoking, and sensual, as it explored sexuality and religion. Another first from the tour was the documentary, “Truth or Dare”, which followed Madonna and crew behind the scenes throughout the tour. The documentary movie received high praise for Madonna.
Also in 1990, Madonna gave one of her best live performances at the MTV Awards, with “Vogue”, in her revealing Marie Antoinette garb.
1991 was turning out to be another stellar year for Madonna, with the release of her first greatest hits album, “The Immaculate Collection”, with two new songs, "Justify My Love" and “Rescue Me”. The “Justify My Love” video would further fan the controversy, which seemed to follow Madonna, as she carefully planned. The video with its sexual context was banned on MTV. The video was released as a first video single and was very successful.
Madonna made another movie in 1992, “A League of Their Own”, which produced the song “This Used To Be My Playground”.
Madonna’s shock effect was never greater than in 1992, when her new album, “Erotica” came out, as well as the “Sex” book, which Madonna herself wrote (containing descriptive information, including pictures, of sexual encounters of a prostitute named "Dita"). The book sold out in a few days, and once again, her Erotica video was banned.
The controversy from the Sex book caused Erotica to be one of her less successful albums, no attention was payed to the album, and it suffered from bad public relations. In 1993, Madonna made another flop of a movie in “Body of Evidence” and followed that with “Dangerous Game”.
Trying to recover from the bad publicity, she decided once again to go on tour. “The Girlie Show” began in September 1993. The show was another Madonna spectacle, though not up to the critical success of “Blond Ambition”.
In 1994, Madonna released her next album, “Bedtime Stories”. The first single was “Secret”, and then her next #1 single, “Take A Bow”. In 1995, she released another compilation, this time for ballads, “Something to Remember”, with three new songs, “You’ll See”, “One More Chance” and "I Want You".
In early 1996, Madonna began filming her dream role, “Evita” in Argentina. The soundtrack from the movie was released in October, with the movie debuting in December.
During filming, she discovered that she was pregnant (Carlos Leon, her personal trainer, was the father). Critics gave her a hard time claiming he was nothing but a sperm donor. On October 14, 1996, Lourdes Maria Leon was born. In 1997, Madonna won Best Actress for her role of Evita, at the Golden Globe Awards.
But rest is not a word in Madonna's vocabulary. 2002 thus far has seen Madonna complete a starring role in the new movie by her hubby, Guy Ritchie, "Swept Away "; start work on her new album; perform a cameo appearance in the new James Bond movie, "Die Another Day", as well as write and sing the theme song from the movie.
2002 also saw Madonna do a photo shoot for Pop magazine, which released three new awesome pictures of her. The photos generated such a response from fans and media alike, as they were taken by surprise. The pictures were very sexual and showed that Madonna has not lost a thing. More pictures from that shoot surfaced later on. Madonna, not resting for a moment, spent May through July, performing in a play on London's West End, "Up for Grabs", which was her first live acting appearance on stage in 14 years.
The performance on stage was very successful for Madonna as the show sold out within a couple of days and the feedback was excellent.
Fans all over came to see her live and went home very impressed with her performance. Madonna is pursuing the possibility of doing the film version of "Up for Grabs".
Soon after these performances were over, Madonna and her family headed to the United States, where she filmed the video for "Die Another Day". The last few months of 2002, will see Madonna deep in preparation to help with the publicity for the release of the two movies, the DAD video, and her new album.
Around the time the new album appears things get high publicity for Madonna. She sets off for a 40 pages story in "W" magazine with picture from photographer S.Klein who takes the same picture along with video images on an exhibit.
Following the luke reception of her American Life album, Madonna decides to go back what she's best known for: live performances.
Spring 2004 she announces to go back on tour with a massive show called Re-invention tour.
Venues all over the USA and Europe sell out in minutes and ticket prices rise sky high.
Madonna also announced to be working on a musical in which she would star and write the score for. A DVD release of the Re-invention Tour is inevitable and M is working on a new studio album, Confessions on a dance floor, which is scheduled for release in the fall of 2005.
M's fifth children's book Lotsa de Casha was released in the spring of 2005 and she also announced to be working on a follow-up to her first book "The English Roses". Her aim is to make an animated series out of the book.
Meanwhile Madonna performed and dazzled the crowds during Bob Geldofs Live8 concert in Hyde Park London.
She performed Like a prayer, Ray of light and Music and was joined on stage by the London community gospel choir and her Re-invention tour band and dancers.
This concert was organised to cause awareness of the contineous dying of poverty in Africa and the G8 summit on July 7th 2005 in Schotland.
