Mustafa Sandal ãÕØÝì ÕäÏá Artists sometimes make funny decisions. At least, this is how it seems like looking at it from outside. What were people supposed to think of Mustafa Sandal’s announcement in 1997 that he intended to move to London? The guy from Istanbul, only 27 years old at the time, had just released his second album in the summer of that year, which had the potential of exceeding the already high expectations. “Golden Ayni” sold 2,5 million Tapes and 600,000 CDs. Sandal played over 200 concerts, gaining enthusiastic fans far beyond Turkey. His experiments with new video-clip techniques – i.e. for the action story in “Bir Anda” – had not only technology freaks astonished. Now: Why London?

His sincere and stunning reply: „I have to be in a city where I am able to see my feet on the ground again. I have the feeling that I still have a lot to discover about myself and my work. But how will I be able to get there, if I feel unable to go step by step?” It had to be London. Mustafa Sandal was able to live a comparatively normal life. He took up his studies again which he had interrupted in the US for his music. Prior to that, Mustafa Sandal had been enrolled for Marketing at the Boston New Hampshire College for two years, after having completed his college degree in Geneva, Switzerland.

The experience gained on his trips and stays abroad was of great benefit to him, when he decided to dedicate himself completely to his music for the time being after his return to Istanbul. Sandal worked together with well-renowned musicians in the Gelisim Studios, such as Onno Tunc, Selcuk Basa, Ugur Basar, and Garo Mafyan. His friendship with Bulent Tezcan opened further doors for his musical career. Mustafa Sandal soon became a sought-after song writer and producer for famous singers, such as Ajad Pekkan, Zerrin Ozer, Aysegul Aldinc, Yonca Evcimik, and Sezen Aksu.

But the much sought-after composer and studio-aid wanted more: his own album. In 1994 the time was ripe. With 1.5 million sold Tapes and 200,000 CDs, “Suc Bende” became the top-seller of the year. Less than a year later, after 140 concerts in Turkey and 30 in the rest of Europe, Mustafa Sandal was established as an exceptional performer. Subsequently, he continued developing his instrumental, arrangement, and programming skills and reappeared on the scene as a producer for the young singer Sibel Alas. Her Album “Adam” found 400,000 happy buyers. Yes… and then came “Golgede Ayni”. And London. What happened next?

Then of course Mustafa Sandal realised that he couldn’t let hold of music. He continued writing songs and played a few concerts. And while in London, he couldn’t resist the offer of producing the young and upcoming artist Izel. It is worth mentioning at this point that her album also sold a good half a million copies.

The time was thus ripe for recording another album. Mustafa Sandal had already written enough songs in London, but he preferred interpreting them in Turkey. And again he was drawn back to the Gelisim Studios, where all had started out for him, as far as his music was concerned. And after four months of intensive work, “Detay” was ready for release. “Aya Benzer” - the first single - went right to Number 1 in the Turkish Charts in autumn 1998, two weeks after it had been released, and made Sandal the darling of all generations. The Album won two Kral-Awards, Turkey’s equivalent of the Grammy. The subsequent tour of 130 shows was completely sold out, and Mustafa Sandal went on to play in the US, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Holland, England, Sweden, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan.

And the next Step? Mustafa Sandal signed a contract with Sony France in 1999 which opened the door to his world-wide presence. “Araba”, one of his greatest Hits, was launched on the European market as a remix version – the video was recorded in Marrakesh. Soon followed first TV-appearances in France, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland.

In June 2000, Mustafa Sandal released his album „Akisina Birak“, a cooperation with the composer and musician Iskender Paydas. The only way you could escape his two songs “Tek Gecerim” and “Hatirla Beni” that summer was if you locked yourself up in a fridge. Sandal went on to establish his own label – Yada Productions – in order to be able to produce other artists more independently. In June 2002, Mustafa Sandal finally released his last album “Kop”, featuring the two hit-titles “Pazara Kadar” and the title song. This was followed by a great tour which this time also took him to Russia and Bosnia-Hercegovina. And he also received another Kral-Award – this time as “Best Male Pop Star”. He also won the same category at the M.G.D.-Awards where his website www.mustinet.net also received an award.
