Outwardly gregarious, full of pep, and with an infectious grin. Those are just some of the words that can be used to describe Razan Moghrabi, the UAE's newest and most promising addition to the pop pantheon.
She has already established herself as a very recognisable face as a presenter for the popular MBC channel. Taking time off from a busy schedule to give reporters and photographers alike a chance to catch up with her, Razan fielded questions with deft answers and posed coquettishly for camera lenses.
Although a dead ringer for dance diva Shakira, Razan looks set to carve out her own career path in the glamourous world of pop. City Times caught up with this debutante to toss a few questions her way, regarding her music career.
"Although I am Lebanese and very proud of it, I also draw heavily on Arabic influences that come out both in my lyrics and in the music," she says. "I drew on themes from my childhood. I also draw on realism, trying and hoping to portray the real world in my songs.
"One of the themes you will come across when you hear my songs, is about Arab women being treated right, both socially and personally - as individuals and as strong people. As for my musical influences, I draw heavily on themes from my childhood and hometown and the people I met."
The last 12 months has kept her hands full with her concerts, promotional tours and endless interviews. "I presented my first LA show interviewing the stars at the Grammy Awards. I remember my favourite part of that show being when I spoke to Beyonce from Destiny's Child and Howie and Bryan from the Backstreet Boys. I've also covered the Top of the Pops Awards, where I met Ronan Keating and Mariah Carey and bumped into old friends Atomic Kitten. I was in Monaco this year to present the Best Arab Artist Awards."
To date, her forte has been presenting live shows, claiming to like the audience interaction. And that would be plenty, when the people she has interviewed are some of the biggest names in the pop industry, including Sting, Westlife, Shakira, Anastacia, Ja Rule, Spice Girls, Shaggy and many, many more. "I've also met former US President Bill Clinton, Queen Rania of Jordan, Carmen Elektra, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones!"
She may have stepped into another segment of the entertainment industry, but that hasn't deterred this former presenter in exploring new avenues. "I'm really a rolling stone," she laughs. "You'll find me modelling the new Mini Cooper, and featured in a PC game as a Lara Croft style character! I'm also going to be the first Arab presenter for Top of the Pops."
Well, having said that, all we can say is, watch out for this shooting star!
